Bowls

Durban Country Club provides all members with the opportunity to engage in this traditional sport which has shown in recent years an increase in popularity amongst South Africa’s younger generation. The Club provides one bowling green conveniently located near the Clubhouse with overwhelming views within a peaceful and natural habitat. Due to Durban’s favourable climate, bowls can be played all year round with little interruption from the elements.

History of the Bowls Club
Bowls was first introduced to the Durban Country Club in 1930 when the croquet lawn in front of the Clubhouse was replaced by a bowling green. Due to the popularity amongst the members, a second green was created in 1941. By 1967 there were 292 bowlers of whom 163 were men and 129 were women.

Bookings
Bowls may be played every day of the week except for Mondays when the green is closed for maintenance. The fee for a bowling session is R12 per session. All members of the Club are entitled to play bowls and bowling recruits are always very welcome. For more information contact the Welcome Desk on 031 313 1777.

Bowling schools play on Tuesdays and Fridays. Wednesdays have traditionally been a ladies day. All other bowlers (men or ladies) not belonging to any of the schools are entitled to play on ‘tabs in’ days, currently Thursday (08h30) and Saturday (08h20) mornings.

Coaching
Coaching lessons are offered by qualified coach, Jack Piek, who upon request can train and advise a beginner, FREE of charge, once a week, until the member is deemed competent to play regularly in a formal game. Please contact Richard Siedle to book on 031 568 1033.

Dress Code
The bowls dress code is stipulated from time to time by the SA Bowling Association and subject further to the discretion of the Bowls Committee.

Code of Conduct
The Bowls Committee has recently introduced a Code of Conduct which includes upgraded Bye-Laws for bowlers and members are requested to make themselves familiar with these rules. For more information contact Richard Siedle on 031 568 1033.
