Durban Country Club

A course steeped in tradition and history, Durban Country Club boasts the unique claim of being the only course on the African continent to be rated in the Top 100 Golf Courses of the World by Golf Magazine USA and is rated in the top 6 in South Africa by Golf Digest SA.

A combination of lush vegetation, sand dunes and stunning views of the Indian Ocean make this course one of the most unique, and challenging, in all the world. One of the defining characteristics of Durban Country Club are the massive undulations in the fairways, especially the 5th, 8th and 17th. The course was built on sand dunes and they are large and interesting.

The par five third hole is rated the best third in the world. Playing from a high tee to a narrow fairway with dense bush and a predatory bunker on the left hand side you’ll see why this is the most popular hole on the course.

Durban Country Club is a shot makers course that you have to think your way around. Most golfers don’t make use of their driver until well into their round due to the narrowness of the opening holes.

The course, overlooking the Blue Lagoon estuary and the Indian Ocean, has hosted 16 South African Opens in total - more than any other club in South Africa - and is the proud host of the centenary SA Open in December 2010.

Signature Hole – Hole 3, par 5
The 3rd hole, a 468-metre par 5, is rated the best third in the world. It requires players to hit their tee shot from the highest point on the course, overlooking the Indian Ocean, into a valley below completely exposing their drive to the ocean gusts. Players must avoid the trees on the right of this straight-away hole, but also miss the large fairway bunker that sits in the landing area on the left. Large trees protect the green's left portion and will also punish any shot hit too long.

Beachwood

A stone's throw from Durban Country Club, the Beachwood course is a hidden gem offering a superb challenge for the golfer that enjoys a typical Links layout. It is currently rated one of the Top 20 courses in South Africa.

The course was taken over by Durban Country Club in the early 1990’s and underwent some refining and alterations to bring the course closer to Championship standard - offering the discerning golfer an alternative challenge at Beachwood.

An interesting aspect of the course is that it lies at the southern end of Virginia Airport - mainly for small commercial aircraft, private flights, training flights and helicopters - adding an element of excitement to see these small aircraft take off and land directly overhead.

Barring the par 3 second, all the fairways run parallel to one another in a N-NE / S-SW direction. The sixth and ninth fairways both have a dog-leg left to consider whereas the other fairways are all straight. There are 41 bunkers around the greens, and 33 fairway bunkers waiting for wayward shots. Four of the holes are blessed with water features and most fairways are lined with trees.

This course is a very good challenge to the handicap, for the fairways are narrow and long, and require precision tee shots and lay-ups. The course is maintained with the same diligence and care as that of the Country Club course.

Signature Hole – Hole 6, par 4
The sixth is one of the most demanding par 4's you will find anywhere. At 410m from the back tee, set high in the dunes, the hole doglegs left, with a stream, bush and water hazard to be negotiated en route to the green.

Golf Tip of the Week

Warm Up before every game

Proper warm-up is essential for peak performance in any sport. If you attend any professional sporting event you always see athletes going through a pre-game warm-up, and pro golfers are no different. By the time tour professionals step to the first tee, they are fully prepared to make their best swings from the opening tee shot.

Most amateurs, however, get "warmed up" by dashing from their cars to the pro shop to check in, then running to the first tee, all within five minutes or so. To avoid injuries and a disappointing round of golf try the following quick warm up routine:

· Get to the course early. Ensure enough time to carry out the necessary “admin” – check in, changeroom, golf attire etc.  It is important that you do not feel rushed, so allow time to complete this entire warm-up period at a leisurely pace.

· Begin warming up on the putting green. Putting is 43-percent of golf and the putting stroke is the slowest and smoothest of all strokes in golf. By spending time warming up on the green first, you will not only be prepared for the speed of the greens but you will also be starting the day with smooth, deliberate tempo.

· Stretch the body.  A very simple and easy exercise/stretch for golfers to do is the standing twist. The Standing Twist with a club is a rotational stretching exercise that benefits the golfer's core. As such, it is an excellent exercise for any golfer to incorporate into his or her stretching routine.  Here is how to do it:

1.      Hold club chest high, arms straight out in front, with grip shoulder-width apart.

2.      While keeping feet and hips fairly stable, rotate club to the right and then the left.

3.      Try to breathe out on every turn to release tension.

4.      Repeat each side 10 times.
